Through the United
Restaurant's Worker's
Compensation Safety
Group, managed by the
Friedlander Group and
underwritten by the State
Insurance Fund, companies
have watched as their
number of insurance
claims and premiums have
dropped significantly,
according to Adam
Friedlander of the
Friedlander Group.
"We tell management
how to avoid particular
problems and trouble
areas," says Friedlander.
"We also explain to them
that safety and low
claims start with the
management's attitude.
Cooperation from management
is critical to
improving safety in the
workplace. Through the
Safety Group's premium
discounts and claim
management services,
restaurateurs can save up
to 50 percent on their
insurance premium and
standard rates," explained
Friedlander.
For Michael Stern of
Haagen Dazs, the
Friedlander program has
developed big benefits.
"We're paying about the
same price as we would
have for the State
Insurance Program, only
with Friedlander we get
the dividend," Stern said.

"We greatly reduce the
cost of claims as well as
send customers quarterly
claim reports. We have
manuals on all sorts of
subjects from proper knife
sharpening methods to
kitchen safety, all of which
are provided by the
Friedlander Group services,"
said Friedlander.
"Management usually
has no idea just how big

he said.
"We're particularly
happy with the fact that
the group is comprised of
fellow operators who
demand the highest level
of safety in their
kitchens," said Samaha.
"I've been very happy
with the whole claims
process as well. It has
gone very smoothly," said
Samaha, who operated
eight McDonald's units in
the Bronx and
Westchester.
"We try to educate the
management, because
very often claims filed are
a direct result of their
training, hiring and commitment
to safety.
Companies with low
claims usually reflect
quality management,"
says Friedlander.
"Most insurance companies
do not site any reason for
their claims trends
to management -only a
monetary figures. At the
Friedlander Group, we try
to get as much information
and detail about each and
every specific claim as
possible, so that management
can eliminate those
specific causes. And, ultimately,
that reduces their
premiums, " concluded
Friedlander.

the problem is until they
themselves experience the
impact of claims on their
premium," he continued.
We consult management
as to the proper methods
of reporting and handling
claims."

job before, " said Peter

McDonald's franchisee.
