As extreme heat becomes an increasing workplace hazard, New York State is taking action to help employers protect their teams. The New York State Insurance Fund (NYSIF) has introduced the Extreme Heat Equipment Premium Credit, a program designed to help small businesses invest in equipment that reduces heat-related risks.
This initiative provides eligible policyholders with a one-time credit of up to 10% of their annual workers’ compensation premium, capped at $1,000. The credit helps offset the cost of purchasing personal protective equipment (PPE) and other solutions that safeguard workers exposed to high temperatures.
The program primarily targets small businesses—generally those with 10 or fewer employees—in industries where heat exposure is common, including food service, manufacturing, warehousing, landscaping, farming, and certain construction trades. Eligible purchases include cooling vests, ventilated hard hats, fans, ventilation systems, cooling towels, and UV-resistant safety glasses.
Friedlander's internal claims data highlights why this initiative is so important. While there were 4 confirmed heat-related claims since 2020, a broader review shows four to five times that number of potentially heat-related events when including claims involving symptoms such as fainting, dizziness, or overheating during the summer months. These “near-miss” or symptom-based incidents often lack explicit documentation tying them to heat—but frequently occur in conditions where heat exposure is a likely contributing factor.
This gap underscores a key challenge: heat-related illness is often underreported or misclassified, even though it can significantly impact worker safety, productivity, and claim costs.
Early symptoms like lightheadedness or fatigue can quickly escalate into more serious conditions such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke if left unaddressed.
Employers interested in participating must purchase qualifying equipment and apply through NYSIF’s online portal. Once approved, the credit is applied directly to their workers’ compensation premium.
For small businesses, the NYSIF Extreme Heat Equipment Credit offers a practical opportunity to invest in workforce protection—helping prevent minor incidents from becoming serious claims as temperatures continue to rise.
